Pre-season tournament Tula Region Governor Cup featuring several Junior Hockey League teams was wrapped up in Tula and Novomoskovsk on August 23rd. In another exhibition game Tyumensky Legion faced Omskie Yastreby for the second time.

Tula Region Governor Cup

SKA-Varyagi Leningrad Region faced Chayka Nizhny Novgorod in the 7th place game. Nizhny Novgorod came out on top and enjoyed a 3-1 win. As was usual at the tournament, Chayka had to work hard for the victory. SKA-Varyagi opened up the scoring with a power play tally early in the second period but Ilya Fedotov brought it back even just a few minutes later. Nikita Shavin and 16-year-old Alexander Pelevin had a marker each in the third frame to win it for Chayka.

Loko Yaroslavl faced off against Mamonty Yugry Khanty-Mansiysk in the 3rd place game. Yaroslavl, who were visibly frustrated by the semifinal loss, went on to score eight goals, while the ‘Mammoths’ were able to respond with just three tallies.

5th place at the tournament was disputed by teams from Western and Eastern conferences. In a very hard-fought game between Sibirskie Snaipery and Taifun Primorie Region it was the latter that won in overtime. Novosibirsk Region scored three unanswered goals in the opening period of play but Taifun rallied back with three tallies of their own in the second as Ilya Ovechkin registered two of the markers. Regulation time solved nothing as Primorie Region found another equalizer in the last minute of the third frame. Taifun won in overtime as Ivan Khrunin hit the twine two minutes in.

The hosts of the tournament – Mikhailov Academy Tula – went up against JHC Atlant Moscow Region in the final game of Tula Region Governor Cup. The teams had respectively defeated Loko Yaroslavl and Mamonty Yugry Khanty-Mansiysk in the semifinal round. Mikhailov Academy held a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of play but less than a minute into the third stanza Moscow Region were able to convert on a power play. In the last minute of regulation Denis Baranov converted on yet another man-advantage – fourth of the night – to force overtime. Extra period solved nothing so the trophy had to be disputed in the shootout and Mytischi prevailed. The very same Baranov scored the winner.
