Junior Hockey League media relations department continues the series of jubilee season reviews for all teams. HC Kapitan Stupino has showed good progress this year. While the team missed the playoffs once again, they have finished higher in the standings for the second consecutive year. If the trend continues, Kapitan are due to make the post-season next year.

In the first season after returning to Junior Hockey League, Stupino put focus on developing their young players. However, this year Kapitan was a force to be reckoned with. Stupino played decent hockey and were amongst the last few teams to lose their last hope of making the playoffs. Moscow Region gave a lot of trouble to the league’s top teams. They beat the mighty SKA-1946 St. Petersburg, Krasnaya Armiya Moscow, Dynamos from Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russkie Vityazi and Almaz Cherepovets twice. Kapitan junior hockey school introduced a few bright talents to the game. Goaltender Arseny Akhmetov and forward Alexei Zhilin made their KHL debuts with HC Sochi. Artyom Maltsev, Vasily Narzyayev and Denis Nazarov spent a lot of time in the VHL with HC Ryazan. Stepan Starkov has secured a roster spot on his KHL team and won a bronze medal at the World Juniors with Team Russia.

Notable players


Amir Garayev along with Georgy Merkulov and Grigory Ponkratov provided the fire-power for Stupino in the regular season. Garayev also represented the club at Junior Hockey League Challenge Cup. Artyom Maltsev and Mikhail Gordeyev led Stupino defensemen in points as they had 19 and 19 respectively. Arseny Akhmetov was the undeniable starting goaltender but Kapitan also have a decent replacement for him. Next season the team will likely opt for the netminding duo of Artyom Mikhailov and Andrei Berezinsky. Vladislav Pakin also made his league debut this season.
