About the League
Two last games of the 2019 Kharlamov Cup Playoffs took place in Junior Hockey League on March 16th. In the East Mamonty Yugry took on Belye Medvedi in Game 5.
‘Mammoths’ won two games on home ice, while ‘Polar Bears’ did the same in Chelyabinsk, turning the series around and forcing deciding Game 5. As the home team, Khanty-Mansiysk got off to a good start but Chelyabinsk woke up soon enough and created a few scoring chances of their own. First goal of the game came six minutes in. Danil Galeyev received the puck from Vladislav Katin, faked a shot, skated to the net and beat Ilya Gorbunov between the wickets. Mamonty Yugry could have improved their lead before the intermission but they didn’t capitalize on their chances. The visitors had to adjust as they took just two shots against Konstantin Kuzmaul in the opening period of play.
Khanty-Mansiysk had another great opportunity to double their lead early in the second period – Artyom Karandeyev’s shot got stopped and Denis Latyshevich failed to put it home from point-blank range. Chelyabinsk began spending more time in the offensive zone and ripped dividends. Nikita Tertyshny found himself behind the net, looked for a passing lane but changed his mind and successfully performed the Michigan. Gorbunov had to make a few huge saves late in the frame but the teams headed to the dressing-rooms for the second intermission tied 1-1.
Third stanza was extraordinary. Dmitry Myakishev put the visitors in the lead just a few minutes in but that goal proved to be the last for Belye Medvedi this season. The mighty offense of Mamonty Yugry was unstoppable after that. First Sergei Golodnyuk tied the game up and then Artyom Zarubin got a minor penalty, which proved to be fatal. Danil Galeyev converted on the ensuing powerplay and that goal turned out to be the series-clincher. Alexander Belyayev added a security goal to the lead late in regulation and Kirill Popov bagged it with the empty-netter a few shifts later. With this 5-2 win over Belye Medvedi the ‘Mammoths’ make the next round, in which they will face Omskie Yastreby.
