JHL Challenge Cup game took place in Nizhnekamsk as part of the 2019 All-Star Week festivities. Team West won the 9th annual game as they defeated Team East 2-0 at Neftekhim-Arena. With this win Team West improves their all-time lead to 8-2.
Russkie Vityazi forward Mark Verba and a bronze medalist with Team Russia at the 2019 World Juniors Kirill Marchenko scored the goals for Team West. The latter secured the win with an empty-netter. It was just the second game in the history of JHL Challenge Cup that featured only two markers. The game drew a crowd of 5,035.
Mark Verba (Russkie Vityazi), Anton Vasiliev (JHC Dynamo St. Petersburg) and Kirill Marchenko (SKA-1946) were named top players on Team West, while Arsen Khisamutdinov (Reaktor) received the honors on Team East. All four players will now participate in KHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition on January 19th and 20th in Kazan.
The area in front of Neftekhim-Arena was transformed into entertainment center for the Challenge Cup. Aside from ice sculptures installed in front of the rink, a special stage was also put it place for Tatarstan artists. A shooting range was open for fans inside the arena. 1st
floor of the facility featured a concert and also gave the fans an opportunity to play hockey on VR system and paint themselves in their favorite team’s colors.
After a beautiful opening ceremony, Junior Hockey League managing director Alexei Morozov,
JHL board chairman Alexander Medvedev
stepped onto the ice along with minister of youth affairs and sports of the Republic of Tatarstan Vladimir Leonov. They gave brief speeches and proceeded to participate in the ceremonial puckdrop.

JHL Challenge Cup is the first big event of the 2019 All-Star Week. It will be followed by Women’s Hockey League All-Star Game on January 13th and KHL All-Star Game and Skills Competition on January 19th and 20th.
