RUSSIA BEATS CZECH REPUBLIC AT U18 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Team Russia faced Team Czech Republic in their second game of the U18 IIHF World Championship. Host country of the tournament won the game 3-2.

Semyon Kizimov wasn’t dressed for the game. Russia started Danila Galenyuk and Daniil Zhuravlyov on defense and Kirill Marchenko, Ivan Morozov and Ruslan Iskhakov as their top line. Goaltender Amir Miftakhov got the nod just like he did in the previous game.

Neither team was able to establish a firm grip on the game early on and kept piling up scoring chances but to no avail for a long time. However, late in the period Jakub Lauko opened up the scoring on a powerplay and Czech Republic went to the dressing-room with a 1-0 lead.

Russia came out strong for the 2nd period of play and grabbed the momentum. They created one scoring chance after another but the puck stayed out of the net for a long time until Ivan Morozov found his target. Assisted by Daniil Zhuravlyov and Alexander Zhabreyev, he tied the game converting on a powerplay with less than five minutes to go in the frame.

Midway through the 3rd stanza Vasily Podkolzin put Russia in the lead with a might howitzer of a shot, while Vladislav Mikhailov picked up an assist. Just a few minutes later Pavel Dorofeyev improved the lead to 3-1. With three and a half minutes remaining to play in regulation Yegor Zamula got a minor penalty, Czech Republic called time-out, pulled their goaltender for the extra-attacker and pulled back to within one.

Alexander Zhabreyev was named player of the game for Team Russia.
