Deciding Game 5’s took place in Junior Hockey League on March 18th to conclude the action for the opening round of the playoffs. Stalnye Lisy hit the ice first in Magnitogorsk as they faced last season’s runners-up Reaktor Nizhnekamsk.

Magnitogorsk had the momentum in the opening period of play, which they converted into a goal at 04-19. Bairas Abdullin made a crisp pass to Andrei Oleinikov from behind the net and despite the fact that the latter had two defensemen around him, he still found a way to one-time it home to give Stalnye Lisy a 1-0 lead. Nizhnekamsk looked like a better team late in the period and forced Magnitogorsk captain Savely Olshansky to take a penalty.

Reaktor failed to capitalize on the ensuing powerplay but when Olshansky got another penalty early in the 2nd period, Nizhnekamsk brought the game back to even. Timur Khafizov kept his head cool on a powerplay and beat Nikita Kamyshnikov from in tight. Stalnye Lisy regained the lead just three minutes later – Yegor Spiridonov found the back of the net. Magnitogorsk got a 4-on-3 powerplay after off setting roughing minors and Timur Khafizov’s minor for tripping but they failed to convert on it. Reaktor spent last minutes of the period peppering Kamyshnikov as they got a man-advantage of their own but the teams still headed to the dressing-rooms with Stalnye Lisy leading by a goal.

Nizhnekamsk had to find an equalizer in the 3rd stanza so they stormed down the ice and created a few good scoring chances. Timur Khafizov may had the best one but he failed to beat Kamyshnikov on a breakaway. Home team answered with a 2-on-1 rush but Korotayev also put his skill on display and the score remained unchanged. Nevertheless, Khafizov got what he was looking for. At 55-48 he found the loose puck in a scrum in front of Magnitogorsk goal and put it home for his second of the night to make a 2-2 hockey game.

Overtime lasted 16 minutes and both sides had their fair share of scoring chances but it was Nizhnekamsk who scored the winner in the end. Reaktor won a face-off, the puck bounced to Bulat Nabiullin and he roofed it just inside the crossbar past Kamyshnikov. 3-2 and last year’s runners-up proceed to next round.
