YURI PLATONOV: “THE GOAL I SCORED WITH MY FATHER, THEY CALLED IT HOME BREW”

Junior Hockey League can already boast a few hockey dynasties. For example, back in 2011 Loko Yaroslavl head-coach Pyotr Vorobyov was assisted by his son Ilya Vorobyov. In 2016 another Loko head-coach Dmitry Krasotkin won the Kharlamov Cup, while his son Anton Krasotkin was the team’s starting goaltender. Nikita Milyokhin has played for two seasons under his father’s command – Mikhail Milyokhin is the head-coach of SKA-1946 St. Petersburg.

However, Stalnye Lisy Magnitogorsk forward Yuri Platonov was blessed a very rare opportunity. At the Davos Hockey Summit tournament in the game against Davos Yuri made his debut for Metallurg Magnitogorsk. He was put on the same line with his father Denis Platonov.

In his first interview to Junior Hockey League media relations department 17-year-old Yuri Platonov said that playing on the same line with his father was his dream and it looked rather far-fetched. However, hockey is an unpredictable game and when KHL season paused for the Olympics, his dream came true.

“When I was a kid, I would come to the dressing-room to see my dad and say hi to other players after every game,” reminisces Yuri. “Perhaps, that’s why it was so easy for me to feel comfortable on Metallurg. Besides, Metallurg and Stalnye Lisy have their dressing-rooms right next to one another. So we all know each other more or less because we meet very often. KHL team has a special atmosphere. Everybody was ready to give me advice and help out.”

- When did you find out that you were put on the same line with your father?
- [Head-coach] Viktor Nikolayevich Kozlov came up to me in the morning at breakfast and told me I would play that day. As for the lines, we found out about them right before the game. We came to the rink and line combinations were listed in the dressing-room.

- Did you father help you to feel less nervous?
- He was giving me advice on what I should do throughout the game. He also praised me after the game. All of the players and coaches congratulated me on making the debut for Metallurg and that I had the chance to play with my father.

- Your line scored in the game against Czech Ocelari Trinec. Was that something you’d worked on at practices?
- Everybody on the team joked about it. They called the goal our ‘home brew’. They said we came up with the combination at home.

- You posted a picture on your Instagram page where you and your father practice at an outdoor ice rink in Davos.
- We had one practice at the outdoor rink. It was an unbelievable feeling. We were surrounded by mountains, snow and nice chalets. It was so beautiful; you couldn’t peel your eyes off of it. I was just enjoying the moment.

- Your dream to play with your father came true. What are you going to dream of now?
- I dream of making my debut for Metallurg in official games and re-create our line in a KHL game.
