Ten regular season games took place in Junior Hockey League on January 30th. The gameday began in Togliatti where local Ladiya and Snezhnye Barsy Astana battled for precious points. Both teams are on the cusp of making the playoff zone in the Eastern Conference and could really use a win.

 

The teams were very tight almost throughout the game as they traded leads and scored equalizers. Ladiya forward Yegor Babenko was the first star of the game as not only he scored a hat-trick but also got the two key goals in the 3rd stanza, which essentially won it for Togliatti. Volga team went on to a 5-4 win on home ice, notably Babenko scored twice in the last five minutes of regulation time.

SКА-1946 St. Petersburg scored three goals on Amurskie Tigry Khabarovsk in the opening 8-14 of the first period of play and that proved to be enough to get a win. Khabarovsk, who gave top team of the Western Conference a run for their money in the first game of the back-to-back series, couldn’t contain St. Petersburg in this one and didn’t get anything past Konstantin Volkov, who was named the top goaltender of last season. Volkov went on to stop 26 shots and SKA-1946 enjoyed a shutout 3-0 win on the road.

Taifun Primorie Region showed their great character in the home game against JHC Dinamo St. Petersburg. After losing the 1st period of play 2-0, Primorie Region team scored twice in each of the following two frames. Konstantin Kalinin, Pavel Tkachkov and Glev Zaitsev all got two points and Taifun won 4-2 on home ice.

Kuznetskie Medvedi lost to Stalnye Lisy Magnitogorsk on home ice in Novokuznetsk. ‘Steel Foxes’ established a comfortable 4-goal lead by the 35th minute of play and didn’t let ‘the Bears’ to get close enough to get any points. Nevertheless, Novokuznetsk did score twice. Top-scorer of the regular season Anton Ruban picked up an assist in this one. In the end Stalney Lisy won 5-2 on the road.

Irbis Kazan played hosts to Altay Ust-Kamenogorsk and enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 win. Igor Tumchenko, Maxim Bain and Artyom Valeyev scored for Kazan. Goaltender Adel Minegaliev stopped all 17 shots he had to face and that proved to be enough to register his 1st career Junior Hockey League shutout.

Sputnik Almetyevsk opened up the scoring in the game against Omskie Yastreby but ‘the Hawks’ were the only team scoring after that. Nikita Samokhvalov tied the game up at 17-44 and then picked up an assist on Dmitry Zhukenkov’s shorthanded marker late in the game. Roman Badanin and Maxim Melnikov chipped in a goal each in between and Omskie Yastreby enjoyed a 4-1 win on the road.

Reaktor Nizhnekamsk lost to Belye Medvedi Chelyabinsk on home ice. That happened largely due to a horrific 1st period of play, which Nizhnekamsk lost 3-0 – Platon Popov got two of the markers for ‘the Polar Bears’. Islam Khasanov scored just as many to help Nizhnekamsk bring the game back to within one with just 33 seconds remaining to play in regulation time. However, Belye Medvedi stood their ground and won the game 4-3 on the road.

Loko Yaroslavl beat SKA-Serebryanye Lvy St. Petersburg in the second game of the back-to-back series. However, ‘the railway men’ had to come back from behind twice. Nikita Anokhovsky was the first star of the game as he netted a hat-trick. Ivan Romanov set the final score at 56-50. Loko Yaroslavl win 4-2 on home ice.

Krylia Sovetov Moscow beat HC Kapitan Stupino in the second game of the back-to-back series as well – this time in regulation. Vladimir Mikhasyonok opened up the scoring late in the 2nd period of play and then Sergei Odinokov and Nikita Kaptelin added a tally each in the 3rd stanza. Stupino managed to get just a consolation goal by Vladimir Kapkin at 56-49. ‘Soviet Wings’ take it 3-1 on the road.

In the last game of the day HC Riga beat Atlanty Moscow Region by the same final score as they did the day before. Notably, Atlanty were in the lead up till the final minutes of regulation – Alexander Poluektov put the yellow-and-blue on the board with powerplay marker late in the 2nd period of play. At 58-27 defenseman Kristaps Zile tied the game up and with just 47 seconds remaining to play on the clock Denis Fjodorovs won it for HC Riga. Emils Gegeris picked up two assists and Latvian team narrowly won it 2-1 on home ice.
