About the League
In the bronze medal game of World Junior A Challenge U18 Team Russia lost 4-2 to U18 Team Czech Republic and finished 4th in the tournament.
Team Russia coaching staff made a few adjustments after semifinal game. Anton Malyshev and Daniil Misyul were put on the first defensive pairing, while Grigory Denisenko, Ivan Morozov and Semyon Kizimov were promoted to the top line. Daniil Isyaev started in goal for Team Russia.
Russia dominated in the opening period of play – they had territorial and game advantage, took more shots on net and looked like a better team over all. Czech Republic relied on inconsistent counter-attacks. With a minute and a half remaining to play in the frame Ruslan Iskhakov had a great chance to open scoring as he was hooked on a breakaway and give a penalty shot. However, he couldn’t capitalize on the chance. In the end the teams headed to the dressing-rooms for the first intermission scoreless.
Early in the 2nd period Czech Republic played more aggressive and at 25-21 converted on a powerplay. Midway through the stanza Ruslan Iskhakov tied it up, while Danila Galenyuk and Nikita Rtischev picked up the assists. Nevertheless, with just 13 seconds left to play in the period Czech Republic regained the lead.
A few minutes into the 3rd frame Jan Hladonik improved the lead to 3-1. A little later Alexander Romanov brought Team Russia back to within one. Late in regulation they tried to get the equalizer and pulled their goaltender for the extra attacker but Czech Republic scored on the empty net to put it in a bag. Team Czech Republic enjoyed a 4-2 win and got the bronze medals at the World Junior A Challenge, while Russia finished 4th. Danila Galenyuk was named the best player for Team Russia after the game.
