Team Russia faced Team Canada in the 2021 IIHF World Championship quarterfinal. Russia lost 2-1 in overtime and was eliminated from the tournament.

First goal of the game came only after the midway point of the second period of action. 16 minutes into the frame Vladislav Kamenev turned at the boards and passed it to the middle of the ice, defenseman Dmitry Orlov skated to the slot but failed to beat Darcy Kuemper. Kuznetskie Medvedi alumnus corralled the rebound, passed it to the area in front of the net and Evgeny Timkin put it home. The forward played for Omskie Yastreby and Russkie Vityazi in Junior Hockey League.

Team Canada managed to come back early in the third period – Adam Henrique one-timed it into the net on the short-side as Sergei Bobrovsky failed to slid there on time. Third overtime minute proved to be fatal for Team Russia. Troy Stecher joined the rush, skated to the goal-line, passed it to the slot and Andrew Mangiapane bubbled the net.

Team Russia lose 2-1 to Team Canada in overtime. Teams Germany, USA and Finland made the semifinals.
