SKA-1946 St. Petersburg’s Konstantin Volkov, top goaltender of the 2016-17 Junior Hockey League season, spoke about his 6-month hockey marathon and shared his most memorable moments of his breakthrough season.

- Konstantin, what did you personally and your team lack in the end of the season?

- We had a competitive team and a great group of guys. We had a solid regular season and the only thing we couldn’t do was make it past second round in the playoffs, losing to Almaz [Cherepovets].

- Why can’t SKA-1946 get past Almaz in two consecutive post-seasons?

- I think, it’s just a unlucky streak of events. There’s nothing particularly special about Cherepovets. We made some mistakes ourselves and lost the series.

- Did you think of last season’s series?

- Yes, but we also remembered Chayka [Nizhny Novgorod] – we had played against them in the finals two years ago. This time we beat them in the first round.

- Last season SKA-1946 got eliminated in the first round. This year you got knocked out in the second. Would you consider it a step forward or it doesn’t really matter when you lose if you don’t get a medal or the cup?

- In comparison to last season, it was definitely a step forward but we still couldn’t achieve the goal we’d set for ourselves for the season. So it doesn’t really matter when we lost.

- Would you say the fact that your series with Chayka went to Game 5 played a big role in the series against Almaz?

- I don’t think so. Everybody was on the same page, although Almaz had finished their series earlier. But we’re all young guys, we have a lot of strength and emotions. I don’t think that the 5-game series against Chayka played a big role in this.

- How valuable to you being named the top goaltender of the season?

- It’s great. It’s a great stimulus to keep further improving.

- Do you follow your personal statistics at Junior Hockey League official website?

- I try not to follow it closely because it’s a pretty big distraction.

- Do you follow who gets selected as top players of the week?

- Yes, a lot of my teammates and friends were selected as such. I was always happy whenever my friends were named top players of the week.

- Who’s the goaltender you like the most?

- It’s hard to pick just one goaltender. I try to follow all Russian goalies who play in the NHL. There are a lot of talented and promising guys in the JHL as well. It’s hard to pick just one off the top of my head.

- Are you ready to go to the next level and play in the KHL or VHL?

- I think I’m ready. At least, I’ll do my best.

- What are your goals for next season?

- I don’t have any set goals yet. My most important goal is to improve my game. What do I have to improve? In modern hockey you have to improve every aspect.

- Who’s your biggest fan and motivator?

- My biggest fans are my parents and my greatest motivator is a win in every game. It’s also awesome to play in front of a soldout crowd. I would like every JHL game to be packed.
